Do mentions require licensing/paying royalties?

That is if, say, a movie mentions Coke or Star Wars or Christian Dior or some known trademark, do the creators have to pay a royalty or otherwise acquire licensing, just for a quick mention? Or is it accepted that people can talk about things in general and a short mention is okay?
