I like my best friend who is a guy and I'm a girl and I asked him out.?

I'm in middle school. One of my best friends is a guy. I like him a lot, and I know he likes me too. I asked him out the other day, and he wanted to talk to my best friend (girl) about my religion. I'm a Mormon and he's a Christian but Mormonism is a form of Christianity. He told her that he likes me a lot, but he didn't know if his parents would accept my religion. She also said that he was also scared to date me because we are really close friends and he cherishes my friendship and he didn't know if we would still be friends if we broke up. I didn't know this at the time, and I thought it was him that didn't like my religion and I freaked out on him. He tried to talk to me, but I left before he could say anything. He sent me an email saying sorry and wondering if we could still be friends. My girl best friend said that he would give me a chance and be my Valentine, but I don't know if I can face him after I freaked out on him. Should I be his Valentine and what should I tell him when I see him?
