What should I bring/buy for a 3-day trip to NYC with my school?

I'm going on a trip to NYC with my school for 3 days next month. The bus ride is going to be from 12 am until we arrive at our hotel around 5:30, so it's pretty long. I need something to do for the ride there and back. I have a book, and another one I'm half-way finished with, my phone which I can listen to music on and that's about it. I'm thinking of buying a portable DVD player as well, and bring a few movies a long the way. I'm sure on the ride there I'll sleep most of the time, but I definitely need something to occupy my time on the ride back. Also, what kind of this should I bring there just to have. I know I'll need a wallet for my money, but I've never really traveled much so I don't really know what else to bring and what I should keep on me when I'm out and about. Help?
